About us

Hypatia Mars is a women-led organization dedicated to advancing space research and outreach, showcasing female talent, and inspiring the next generation.

We promote the active participation of women in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) through an inclusive, intergenerational, and multidisciplinary approach.

Why We Exist

At a time when the world faces unprecedented scientific, social, and environmental challenges, Hypatia Mars embraces space not just as a frontier to be explored, but as a powerful lens for reimagining our future and reshaping society.

Despite the profound influence of science and space technologies on our daily lives, women remain significantly underrepresented in these fields.

That is why our initiative is at once a scientific mission and a symbolic statement: to open space to women by giving them visibility, a voice, and a meaningful role in shaping the research, knowledge, and exploration of the universe

At Hypatia Mars, we believe that advancing gender equity is not just a matter of fairness—it is a necessary step toward building a more innovative, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.

Our Story

In 2021, astrophysicist Mariona Badenas-Agustí and science communicator Carla Conejo González launched the idea of leading an all-women analog space mission to conduct research, engage the public, and create real, relatable female role models in STEAM.

In 2023, they formed the first all-female Catalan crew for a mission at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah, USA. The Hypatia I expedition marked the founding of the Hypatia Mars Association—followed by Hypatia II in 2025, with more missions planned. Both expeditions gained broad attention, sparking renewed interest in space and science outreach across Catalonia and beyond.

Named after Hypatia of Alexandria, the first known female scientist, the initiative honors her legacy and symbolizes the recognition women deserve but have often been denied.

What We Do

Hypatia Mars is a pioneering project led entirely by women from scientific, technological, artistic, and humanistic fields. Born to break barriers, highlight female talent, and generate knowledge that benefits society, it advances space exploration through three strategic pillars that promote diversity and excellence in STEAM.
