On Tuesday, May 13, Anna Bach (XO of Hypatia II) and Estel Blay (Commander of Hypatia III) were invited to the Palau of the Generalitat of Catalonia as representatives of the Hypatia Mars Association. They met with the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and the Counselor of Research and Universities, Núria Montserrat.
The conversation centered around the importance of fostering scientific and technological vocations among girls and young women, a mission that Hypatia Mars has been strongly committed to since its inception. Beyond the simulated Mars analog missions, Hypatia is known for its impactful science outreach and public engagement efforts, bringing space science and research closer to society, especially among younger audiences.
“We emphasized that increasing the visibility of women in STEM and creating accessible experiences is key to reducing the gender gap in science and technology,” said Estel Blay.
President Illa and Counselor Montserrat showed great interest in the initiative, recognizing the educational value of Hypatia’s missions and its broader contribution to scientific literacy and equity in the field. The meeting explored potential ways for the Government of Catalonia to support and collaborate with Hypatia Mars, particularly ahead of the upcoming Hypatia III mission.
“The President’s support and curiosity about our project were truly encouraging,” added Anna Bach. “It’s clear that there is political will to promote more inclusive and innovative approaches to science education.”
After the formal meeting, the Hypatia team was given a brief tour of the Palau de la Generalitat, a symbolic and historic setting that underscored the significance of the encounter.
“We’re deeply honored to have been received by the President and the Counselor”, said Blay. “This recognition reaffirms the importance of our mission, and we’re hopeful that this will mark the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the Generalitat of Catalonia aimed at empowering the next generation of women scientists in Catalonia.”
